Термином DSL называется технология высокоскоростной передачи данных по физической линии. Данное решение определяет набор протоколов физического и канального уровней трансляции дискретных сигналов по медным проводам. Для организации подобной цифровой линии связи применяется специальное оборудование, которое необходимо установить как у провайдера, так и у конечного пользователя. В настоящее время существует несколько видов DSL-технологий: HDSL (High bit rate DSL), SDSL (Symmetric DSL), ADSL (Asymmetric DSL) и некоторые другие. Все семейство подобных технологий кратко называют общим термином xDSL, где вместо символа "x" может подставляться любая из букв, определяющая подтип стандарта DSL.
